For a scientific person that wasn't very logical ! What if

replacing the rectifier/regulator (RR) didn't cure it ? 



What (and this is what happened to me) the replacement was

faulty ?



The possible problem areas are



Stator

Stator wiring to RR

RR

Control wire to RR

Battery wire to RR

Earth wire to RR



And the problem needs to be identified ! Bob's guidance is

spot on !



If it is actually the RR then there are two possibilities



1. A component has actually failed  or

2. The soldering of a component has failed (a dry joint)



In the case of 1. the charge will stop and it won't

re-start. In the case of 2. it may restart and work

intermittently.



The soldering is a bit wild in there, but the continual

heating up in use under the cowling and cooling on

shutdown is a recipe for dry joints if the job wasn't done

well in the first place.



My replacement was faulty (the ammeter vibrated between 1

and 10 amps 5 times a second at and above 5000 rpm). It

has been returned for the supplier to test and replace.



My old intermittent failing RR was attacked with a

soldering iron to clean up three possible dry joints and

has been refitted. It worked but the wx has been so bad I

haven't had the chance to test it for long enough to

determine whether I have fixed it. I am not optimistic but

pigs might fly one day.



Did you keep your old RR as a spare (it works sometimes -

which is better than one that doesn't work at all !) ?



If you have it but don't want it would you donate it to me

?  For research !
