I know it may be a bit late this season but what do owners use to stabilise their fuel during the winter?
I know of Sta-bil in the USA for motor vehicles but not sure what to use on my Rotax 912S here in the UK.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hello Steven,
I think that stabilization may be necessary only for mogas containing substantial levels of ethanol (5% or more).
Here in France the use of 98 Mogas is a good guarantee to avoid any water absorption within the fuel. I remember had tested 98 unleaded fuel and found absolutely no water inside.
Moreover, the inner position of fuel tank inside the Europa fuselage lessens the risk of internal condensations mainly due to quick temps variations.
Beside those remarks, I would not be confident to add any chemical in my tank, without considering its compliance with the whole fuel line, including pumps, pressure regulator & carbs...
To check the level of water in your fuel, you can use a cheap "fuel checking" tube easily find at Spruce aircraft.

Steve,
We have always used Sta-bil and leave the tank about 1/2 full of 94 octane car gas each winter. We top the tank with fresh car gas prior to first flight in the Spring. Typically the plane is not flown from December to March.

Good afternoon Jim & Heather,
As an add on to this topic, do you do anything special to the engine to prevent/retard corrosion of the cylinder walls and pistons?

If I were to store it for over 90 days I’d drain the auto fuel and replace with 2 gallons of 100LL and run it a while to get the carb bowls full. Less than 90 days, no worries.

Mike,
No, we don't do anything to the cylinders. Our understanding is that the cylinders are treated at the factory and require no further protection. That's why a Rotax can sit for several years with no protective action needed even tho it was run at the factory.

I add 2 grams of BHT (food grade butylated hydroxytoluene) anti-oxidant per 5 gallons ethanol-free mogas anytime I don't immediately use the fuel.
BHT is readily available on eBay (much cheaper than Sta-bil and possibly the same stuff, but without all the petroleum distillates that I don't want). BHT dissolves instantly in mogas.
This is about 2 grams per 2700 gm of fuel, or 0.07%, or about 0.7 ppt. Not very much! Possibly not even enough anti-oxidant for all applications. My goal is to mitigate the formation of gums or gummy deposits in the carbs.
Many years ago I used small amounts of BHT for the same purpose in a hydrocarbon-based rocket fuel for the US Air Force.

Please anyone in the UK running their aircraft on a LAA permit do NOT add
additives as suggested below. It could invalidate your Permit and your
insurance company may also rebel, . It may work but is not approved for use
in the UK
