part number: 9234c120-r7 Motion

Dear all,

After intermittent failures the flap drive finally quit working. After searching through the message board and also catching up with the Vans community it seems to be a frequent problem with these motors. Our question to you is now: Is there an alternative part or newer version (read not from Motion or where the problem is remedied) for this drive, and possibly avoiding drilling new holes in the fuselage? Quick answers would be super nice.

Thank you.

Alexander C

I can't help C but as far as I know the statistics for the motor are very good. But I think now that I will always carry a spare with me C ordered from Europa.
The other reason for this reply is : what is the best way to do a flapless landing ?
I tried it in the early days C but gave up because of the nose high attitude.

<<...Quick answers would be super nice...>>

Try cleaning the commutator; needs doing every 100hours or so and cures
intermittent operation.

Yes, it seems to have been the thing to do. Cleaning the commutator as one can find in the message boards here and for Van's. However, we had a failure after 54h engine time. Is not encouraging and also makes me wonder about the long term performance. We would like to go long distances and something like failing when setting up for a short field landing with no other field around is not my preference. I called Europa yesterday and they actually offer a different part now for approx. 380EUR. incl. an adapter plate. OK, there is an alternative, unfortunately with a hefty price tag. So, I still look around for some other solutions...

Hi Alex,

If you Google "Linear actuators" I suspect that you will find a lot of suitable replacements.  Take a look at http://www.firgelliauto.com/

Thank you Paul,

I just do not know enough technical specs about the original system to decide on a different actuator. I could not find anywhere the spec's of the original motor and actuator. I emailed Motion System and we are in touch but not much further. I was also wondering if somebody has the brand and spec's of the new actuator that EUROPA ships now. I had a look at the builder's manual but all I have is a picture without spec's. See the attachment. Anyone and idea what they ship and what is written on the engraving plate?

Hi Alex,

I have a Europa Monowheel and it has a manual push rods for the flaps.  At one time I did seriously consider converting my Europa to a conventional tail dragger and I purchased a Motion Systems actuator based off the recommendation from Bob Berbue.

I can go to my hanger and go and check its specifications if you would like me to, however I used the information from Bob which may or may not be the same as what Europa factory specifies.

I assume that the part / model number has been removed from your actuator ?

One more suggestion, you might like to contact Bob Berbue at Flight Crafter's and ask him, or, perhaps put a note on the forum to the guys that have conventional tail dragger's and ask them what actuator they used.

Let me know if you would like me to go check the part number for the actuator that I have.

Paul

Yeah, forgot that part. In fact, even though I bought this back in 2007, I seem to remember having concocted a "I need this to automatically open a gate for my poor old grandmother who's in a wheelchair" story.... too bad they never asked, Laughing
