Windshield Question?

Hi Jeffrey;
Those of us who have passed the stage will probably remember how flimsy and flexible the entire forward cockpit section of the fuselage felt before we bonded the windshield on, and how stiff it became once the windshield was bonded.
I am no structural engineer but looking at the small dimensioned arch holding the front up in case of a upside down landing I would use everything possible to stiffen the windshield enclosure. A bonded windshield seems to be a first line of defence to this.
I wanted some extra protection and stiffness and I opted to add 2 layers of CF unidirectional to the arch inside before gluing the windshield – I could not believe how much these 200 grams of material increased the stiffness of the arch. Well worth the effort!  The 2 straps were guided into the stiffening foam pads on both sides of the fuselage bottom  to allow transfer of loads better.
Having twice taken out the REDUX mounted wing spar caps I can assure you it is not that hard to work REDUX to let go of parts. I have not done windshields but I would opt for a hot wire type of removal, or using heat and a sturdy blade to pry it off. I would not fasten the windshield any other way than gluing as the windshield adds significantly to stiffening the cockpit module.

Subject: Europa-List: Windsheild Question?

Dear Europaphiles,
Has anyone made their windsheilds serviceable by making them removeable?  I know the direction call for bonding them in, however, I would like to explore if anyone has gone in this direction.
Sincerely,
Jeff Paris Kit #A012 Classicic Monowheel.

Hi JefferyI havn't heard of having a removable windshield, but someone used small screws to hold in position while bonding and think left them there.A slight off topic question from original question, does anyone layup perhaps some thin model aeroplane cloth or perhaps 1 BID over plexiglass seam to help prevent any cracking?Ron Parigoris [quote][b]
