Hello Dan and fellow 701/801 owners.
I have also had the smell of gasoline in the cockpit in my 701. I have three fuel valves in the cockpit, one for each wing and one for the header tank.
They all leak a little, enough to cause the smell but not enough to leave a puddle of gasoline on the floor. Attached is a picture of the fuel valve i am using.

Old leaky fuel valve. New Andair fuel valve to be installed.
I intend to change them out soon with the andair ([url=http://www.andair.co.uk/system/index.html)]http://www.andair.co.uk/system/index.html)[/url] fuel valve for the wings,
and hope to find something more solid for the header tank. This is just to reduce the odor, but like Gary Gower says in his mail:
"We have to-admit that -Airplanes have a very pretty smell of gasoline and live with it".

I did a little more research today and found the following. Per EPA study, rubber fuel line such as used on lawn mowers and RV equipment can out-gas as much as 5 gram (weight) of fuel per foot per day. Using this number I estimate that the lines in a 701 fuse and cockpit could out-gas about 0.424 liquid oz. per day. That is certainly enough to create a smell in the cabin. Also stated in the study was that replacing the lines with newer out-gas free lines could reduce the permeability by 95%. So many 701 seem to have the smell problem that it is unlikely a leak or we all don't know how to connect rubber hose without leaks. The best I can remember the hose I used came from Zenith with the kit. I might have bought or replaced it with hose from the local auto store, but it wasn't anything special as I recall. It is similar to lawnmower fuel line. Just another observation..

Hello group, I recently replaced the fuel lines in my 701 with Parker series 39704 SUPER-FLEX FL 1/4" Low Permeation fuel line. Since the replacement the overall opinion by me and my wife is that the gas fumes are significantly reduced in the cockpit. The original fuel lines were Goodyear 1/4" rubber lines. Before I replaced these I thoroughly inspected the fuel path for any signs of leaks including the fuel sending units (mine are side mount type) and found nothing that would account for fumes.
So my conclusion is that the original GoodYear lines outgased and caused the fumes, since replacement with the Parker lines, things are much better in the cockpit. The Parker fuel lines were purchased from Aircraft Spruce.

I have the Andair valve so no leaks there, however on occasion after refuelling I would get a odour in the cabin that lasted a few weeks. I thought this was caused by spillage during fuelling as any overfill runs into the wing and pools under the tank exiting at the drains with the appearance of a leaky drain. Last week I refuelled carefully but still got seepage and smell from that source, and in the cabin. My senders are on top and I opened the inspection and found sludge and fuel solids around the attach screws which penetrate the tank. It looks like when the tanks are topped off there was a dribble of fuel getting past the threads and into the wing.
I have sealed the screws with hylomar and hope thats the cure otherwise there is a crack that cant be seen.
