For anyone who has purchased 6061-t6, or knows where to get it. Where is the best and cheapest place you guys and girls have found to get it. I have been using Airparts, but I have been spending up to $150 a sheet + Shipping. A lower price would allow me to get my plane done faster.

Thanks,

Derek Lewis

Hi Derek,

Shipping is a huge portion of aluminum prices. That means the best
vendor choice depends on where you are located. It also depends on
how much metal you order at one time.

Aircraft Spruce is a good source of small quantities for UPS shipment.

Perhaps you could tell us where you are located and how much aluminum
you plan to buy at each order so we can make an intelligent recommendation.

I've been using Yarde Metals www.yarde.com and have no complains. The prices are good and the bigger the order the cheaper they get. They package the material very well and their customer service is very good.

Here is what I paid in my last order (May 2008), the S&H was waived, the flat bars is for the wing main spar:

Material Price Quantity Sub Total Item # 1 - 6061-T6 SHT. .016" X 48" X 144" 53.13 1 53.13 Item # 2 - 6061-T6 SHT. .025" X 48" X 144" 77.19 5 385.95 Item # 3 - 6061-T6 SHT. .032" X 48" X 144" 79.18 2 158.36 Item # 4 - 6061-T6511 FLAT BAR 1/4" X 1 1/2" X 12/FT. 15.66 8 125.28 Order Total 722.72

I get my 6061 T6 aluminum from Trident Metals in Austin. I pay $65 for a 4X12 sheet of .025. I'm lucky they are less than an hour's drive from me.

Just FYI,

I'm going to be bending my own landing gear and ordered a big ole' hunk of 6061-T6 (3/4" thick x 8" wide x 97 inches long) from Trident Metals today. The cost without shipping was $188.50. It was the best price I could find.

I have the stock aluminum gear that came with my QBK. It weighs in at 45
pounds all by itself.
I just now woke up from my nap (daily thing) and had a dream of making new
gear out of carbon fiber....
I might do that someday but when I went online and saw your post about
bending your own aluminum gear, I wanted to type.
A few years ago I had Grove gear made for my Avid Flyer.
I watched the manufacturing process step by step.
A pattern was used to cut out the shape on 7/8 inch flat aluminum stock.
After cutting out the shape it went to a boring machine where it was "gun
drilled" for the brake fluid. The edges were routed round and the part was
taken to a huge brake where it was bent to specs.
It looked like a landing gear but was not done until the piece was placed in
a large oven to heat temper the metal...
Anyway to make this story short, It was not an easy process.
Good luck with making your own landing gear..
I still like the carbon fiber idea...

I live in St George, Utah. I've been trying to find somewhere within 300 miles. Its within my driving distance, and would allow me to pickup my own load.

Thanks,
Derek
