Does anybody have a measurement of the final length of the tape aerial mounted in the fin of the Europa after adjustment with the SWR gadget?
Is there any reason why I should not paint over the aerial with rest of the fin closeout ?
Thanks
Mike Gamble
Finally getting ready for the paint-shop.

Mike, Is there any reason to paint the tail close out, or the other close
outs for that matter? David Joyce, G-XSDJ (with naked close outs!)

With the moveable bits off the close outs will catch overspray anyway so I
just thought I would finish the job I believe that glass over the aerial
will affect its performance so I wondered if the paint might also.

Glass neither paint will hinder the performance. In the worst case you have to retune the antenna, but this is not likely. It is best to leave the aerial tuned to the lower part of the band until the airplane is finished, and then trim the lenght to the middle of the band. But then again it doesn't really matter, since the coax lenght is fairly small, and losses are therefor minimal anyway. As long as the SWR is within the radio's manufacturer limit you don't have to bother over its performance.

To be complete, ordinary paint will have next to no effect on antenna
performance with the major exception being UV barrier, metal containing
primer. These coating will significantly shield the antenna and reduce
effective radiation.
