I have started the build. Working on section 1 - Fuselage Prep. today.

The production of my kit was delayed a couple of weeks which then led into transportation delays due to the ice storms and the holidays. All this resulted in the airframe kit not being delivered until January 7th.

However, now I am very happy that everything has arrived undamaged and there are just a few parts on back order, which are not needed immediately. At this time everything is as expected with the appropriate holes already cut in the rear fuselage bulkhead for the seatbelt and rudder cables.

A packing list accompanied the final shipment, which was very helpful. A box of metal parts had no packing list, but Mark S. from Arion quickly supplied one via email and everything checked off.

I got my sliding canopy windows and am very pleased with them. I requested these rather than the hinged ones after I saw this type on Buz's airplane. I will post a photo after I have taken the protective coating off the canopy.

One piece of info for future builders is not to expect to be able to use the shipping crates as shop stands. The packing is quite appropriate for the mode of transport used, but it is mostly bubble wrap and cardboard so you won't be making a fuselage stand or wing stands out of that!

I am updating my build log on-line. Not much to read yet, but I hope eventually it will be of use to those who come after me.

Best regards
Colin K.

Keep at it Colin! I was cursing your KitLog site tonight and see that you updated it, great job!

By the way, to all. There are currently two Lightnings being built that are keep their logs on www.mykitlog.com.

Colin Kennedy
http://www.mykitlog.com/cojaken/

Jim Langley
http://www.mykitlog.com/pequeajim/
This site gets a lot of visibility from builders around the world. I originally was keeping my log at www.jimslightning.com, but found KitLog to be so much better, so I created a link to the build log site. Colin is logging all of his build activity on KitLogs site as well.

Jim!

Colin,
Keep at it on a regular basis and we will see you at Oshkosh. Heck, make that Sun-N-Fun since the Lightning is a fast build kit.
Blue Skies,

Thanks for the encouragement Buz.

I do believe what you suggest is possible for the homebuilder. I fact, I think John Eynon, who took delivery at the same time, might beat that schedule!

However, with a wife, three kids, a dog and a full time job, my ambition is to fly in spring 2009. Still pretty fantastic when compared to anything with similar speed and solidity!

Hopefully I'm a better pilot than a typist!

Great, Colin. I hope it becomes a family project so that they feel they are part of the process. Don't know how old your kids are, but even at a young age they can do some things like hand you tools. And this spring of 2009 is certainly a realistic goal.

I agree! I would've loved to have been able to do that kind of a thing with my dad when I was young. I remember several times working on tractors, combines, and cotton pickers back in the day with him when I was young and loved that. I still would really love to build a plane.

On the previous topic about the Odyssey and the Dynon. I know the Dynon that we had in the prototype would get lost if turing one way and then whipping it the other way. It was like an electronic version of a gyro tumbling. I've also heard of that particular version getting lost in turbulence. Not knocking Dynon as I've only had experience with that one model. I believe the reasoning was that it only had a dual axis solid state gyro where the GR had a 3 axis. I have no idea about the Odyssey and what it's capable of. I know that the GR stuff had all of the same listed usability and programibility as far as I can recall. One added benefit of using that equipment is also that the Arion folks know that system and can help troubleshoot or can get it replaced easily.  Just a few little thoughts on panel layout. Brian W.
