This is from the EAA and should help with the N number requirement.

What size does my N number have to be?
Your N Number must be at least 3 inches high when the maximum cruising speed of the aircraft does not exceed 180 knots CAS. If the maximum cruising speed is over 180 knots CAS, then the size of the registration number must be 12 inches high.
Note: If you plan on traveling internationally, through ADIZ or DEWIZ, registration numbers must be 12 inches high, and can be fixed temporarily, or permanently.

For experimental amateur built aircraft the 3 inch numbers are fine - no restriction of speed or anything. The only time you would need 12 inch numbers would be if you took it across international borders. Many homebuilt aircraft that go out of the country just put on temporary stick on numbers for that specific trip.

Help yourself. Talk to Shawn at aircraftpaintschemes.com.

Hi email address is info(at)aircraftpaintschemes.com (info(at)aircraftpaintschemes.com)

He is good at coming up with some nice variations of different designs as well.

If you want to fool around with a line drawing of the Lightning, they have one available on their web site, www.aircraftpainschemes.com.

Good luck

Jim!

Thanks for the heads-up, Jim. I am far from deciding on the builder assist program, as I don't have buy-in from the spousal-unit, yet.

Thanks Rick. You will love the aircraft for sure. I was back and forth
several times about the Lightning because of my size, (6'-3"), but that
turned out to be a non factor. When you get a flight with Ryan, you will
fall in love with it.

Two things to consider during a demo in his plane.

1. His is a little noisier than a regular Lightning configuration as he is
flying with straight pipes.

2. His is also a bit smaller than the current kit.

They are great folks to deal with. Are you possibly going to use the
builder assist?

Jim!

You have to work on that one...

Tell her how educational the process is and how much fun she will have doing
this with you.

That is what my wife said to me...

For the retaining wall, the garden building, the extended driveway, walkway,
picnic area, fire pit.... You get the idea.

Jim,
Being a OVL on this web site (Opinionated Vicarious Lurker), with no observable taste or graphics training, I will state the following:

The most visible color against the sky is bright yellow - from my RC Glider days.

There is very little dark blue occuring in nature - from my bow hunting days. We would put blue fletching on the arrows to make them easier to find, however we were looking for them on the ground, and not in the air.

In nature, darker colors are generally to the bottom of the object.

I have no idea if any of this is true, but it is what I have heard. To quote Buz, "Your milage may vary."

My son is a trained graphic artist and is coming over today. He is also a pilot, has good artistic taste, and is great with photoshop and illustrator. I cannot wait to show him these drawings and get his opinion of them. If he has any suggestions, I will let you know.

Scotty

PS: The tail swirl is great, the wheel pants need some color, and I like the blue one best.

Jim, I would certainly think so - an international boarder. Based on your plans to fly there numerous times, I think is would be best to go with the larger numbers.

Actually, Canada is OK for exp amateur built with three inch numbers. You just have to be in contact with a controller and have your transponder squawking the right code and make an appointment ahead of time at your POE.
