My understanding is that the A-65 isn't all that heavy - IF you use lightweight accessories. I understand that an 0-200, stripped, is about 180 pounds, and I'd *guess* the A-65 would be slightly less. Power won't be enormous, but should be acceptable - it'll have that 65 hp and full torque at the same prop rpm as any other 65 hp engine. You'll need to check the thrust bearing, to make sure it's configured for a pusher application. Total weight, in my eyes, would be the kicker. A while back I asked a similar question and got blasted about total engine weight. I doubt that would be a problem. If the pilot is heavy, an A-65 is going to suffer a bit with its' marginal power, but if the pilot is light to average the thing should fly fine. With a passenger, I dunno. As I asked in my previous question - what's the practical difference between a 200 lb engine with a 200 lb pilot, and a 160 lb engine with a 240 lb pilot ?? Fuel Injected, electronic ignition A-65 ?? Not traditional, but if it works..........?? Talk to Klaus Savier at Lightspeed Aviation. Lar.

Hmmm, there's a thought... cooling could be an issue in a pusher
installation like a Kolb, especially on the ground.
Somehow, though, the idea of a fuel injected, electronic ignition A-65 just
seems wrong...

Larry if you recall the Mark III that I had with the 582 on it, I
considered it marginal enough that I did not enjoy flying it at all.
Add even more weight to it and the best that you could say is that it
flies, or lumbers which ever. You will definitely be committing
aviation, but it will be a misdemeanor at best.

a Kolb into a dog that barely flies by under powering. That would
take all the fun out of flying a Kolb.

Yah, I recall your plane clearly, Larry, and the wonderful ride it took us on a few years ago. It took a long time to carry us up over Crater Lake, but then again, remember that I weighed 200# and you were more than that. I even mentioned it on the web page I built on that ride: http://www.webpictures.homestead.com/klamathfalls.html I did mention marginal power, and "I dunno" about carrying a passenger. I don't remember your field altitude, but that and Grant's Pass where we returned from are at a pretty high altitude, aren't they ?? Also, last night I remembered something about changing the carburetor to turn the A-65 into an A-75. Or was that C-65 into C-75 ?? I'm not saying it would be a great combination, and I wouldn't want it myself, but if he has the engine, it should fly the plane.

Guess we are takling a heavy MKIII? Mine weighed 492 lbs and took off
and flew very well with a 532.. at 600 ft msl..Herb

On a Kolb the prop diameter would be limited.
Agree the VW was designed to turn more rpm. But the Jab is an
aircraft engine from the get go, not a converted auto engine.

john I don't know why the prop dia would be limited on a kolb... the
engine mount could be built to raise the engine, to give boom clearance...
I would have to take some measurements, maybe it would have to mounted way
too high to work. I will concede here, I have not done the homework.
. But the Jab is an
aircraft engine from the get go,
true enough,,, but it was designed to produce the power at 3300 to 3500
(best of my memory) which is still 1000 rpm above the continental. Thus
the smaller prop to keep the tips sub sonic, the smaller prop works well at
135 to 150 mph.... but not on a kolb.
still without having done any homework,,, hp / weight would be my biggest
concern, and 65 hp on a mkIII seems short of power. Ok maybe at sea
level... but where I fly,, one would not be happy.
Not withstanding the cost,,, the 912 still seems the best engine for the
application. Or the 912s
