Imagine being a passenger on this flight. I think with the weather showing what it did I would hold.

I'm thinking that passengers saw a lot less than we did. Very cool.

Really didn't seem that bad once on approach. Good to know, I think I will ignore RED on the WX displays going forward.

I trust you're joking. The guy that did this has no experience with microburst or justan idiottaking many people's lives in his hands. Hopefully he will do this again soon solo and the flying public will be saved.

To follow on, my other thought was his flight path for a go-around.  Should he get hit with sheer or turbulence or anything else, he only had one way to go and that was into the teeth of the storm for his missed approach.  He had to hope nothing was going to get him so he could make that landing work on the first try.

It would be nice to know how he was doing on fuel so we knew what his real options were.  It's possible that he didn't have the fuel to hold and wait for it to move off or to fly to a remote airport in a country where airports are more sparse than they are here.

Yes kidding of course. I was hoping the absurdity of my comment would come through.
I love having WX in the cockpit and give anything RED great respect & a wide birth. I really don’t ever come close to that type of WX. Just being practical because my wife has no idea where I buried all the cash in the back yard.

You need to know Robin to know that was completely sarcastic. I know for a fact, being my first flight with my family was to visit Robin, that he is VERY safety conscience.

I have a local pilot flying a 310 who routinely flies in any weather. About a month ago I saw him takeoff around midnight at the beginning of a bad thunderstorm. I was busy working on the plane in the hangar. I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched him take off. There was a lightning strike in the area every 5 to 10 seconds as he was taking off and got very heavy rain within a couple minutes of his takeoff. I watched him make a 180 deg turn after takeoff and saw lightning strike right where he was.

I ended up getting some wind damage to my house from that storm about 4 miles from the airport. Apparently he has been doing this for a very long time. Don't know how he does it or if he has any special equipment on board. Maybe he is just lucky. When I saw him at the airport the next morning he said the storm was all bark and no bite.

I guess the 310 driver likes that adrenaline rush. Not for me.

OK, as an airline pilot I now know not to fly Mexicana. Looking at the radar picture, the visual picture out the front, and the reported 800m vis (exactly on the minima for a Cat 1 ILS) I don't know anyone in my airline who would've continued that approach. I plan on reaching retirement and not getting killed on the way & taking 150 people with me.

For the sake of scooting off and doing a couple of holding patterns until the storm passed through, that was a stupid risk.

And the F/O was busy filming the whole affair! WTF??? Filming the approach with his iphone is more important than monitoring wind speeds? Checking the approach profile? Keeping an eye on the radar? Monitoring the Captain's flying? Making sure the checks are complete? Like I said - WTF?? That is supreme dereliction of duty during a critical phase of flight into adverse weather conditions, "Mexicana style"!

Mexicana Management obviously doesn't watch youtube! In our company this would be "You're cordially invited to tea and biscuits with the Chief Pilot. Cold tea, bring your own biscuits, wear a tie, and remain standing to attention while you're berated."

And that 310 driver mentioned above is unlikely to survive til retirement either!
