Greetings to all from Kenya.
Kenya Europa classic monowheel 5Y-LRY has been flying 10 years now (550 hours), and the retract bungee is getting tired. After takeoff and climbout at 70 knots the pressure on the flaps helps the retract process, but the retract lever needs a good shove into the forward recess. It would seem that changing the bungee is really quite a nightmare, and perhaps I can stave this off for a year or two by retensioning them (I have never done this before). Has anyone tried this? How much life can I expect on retensioning?
All the best
Richard

Hi Richard
Had the same problem last year on my classic #109. If you remove the
exhaust and the metal firewall it is easy enough to get at. The whole job
to replace with new bungee took only an afternoon.

Pete

Hi Richard,
After about 8 years service on my Mono I carried out a re tensioning of the
bungies without too much drama. I seem to recall being able to tighten to
the extent of getting another complete wrap around the frame.ie two extra
strands. It made a great improvement to the retraction process. The
difficulty is distributing the re tensioning to all the strands. You will
probably need to remove the stainless or Singleton fire bulkhead in order to
get sufficient access.
Re tensioning the Mono bungee is easy easy compared with tightening the tri
gear bungee.

I wonder whose trigear you are referring to. The tri bungee is fully accessible from underneath C and re-tensioning it is a 20-minute job C but it is a 2-man job C unless one of the other solutions is used C i.e. springs or multiple separate loops.

Hi! Richard, the best way to add tension is to buy a pair of rope clamps as
used by mountaineers. You can use two by pulling down on one and pushing up
on the other to gradually work some slack from the middle to the end on
both sides in turn. I don't know what the correct name is but they only
allow the bungee to slip in one direction. Try a mountaineering shop to buy.
It is a pig of a job and you need shoulder muscles like "popeye"!

correct name "jumars" or "shunts" in the uk...dunno what they are in the US
you could probably use a prussic loop (ask a climber) which can be made out of a loop or para cord has very similar action to the above

I am of course referring to the original Europa standard design, single
string, rubber bungee. To achieve the necessary tension on this, to do the
job, required considerable effort and required exposure to some degree of
danger. For the tri gear there is of course no need to remove the fire
bulkhead as they are located differently from the Mono.
Using multiple loops of rubber or even better the steel springs overcomes
this particular problem.

This isn't as difficult as you might think. I had to replace my monowheel bungee last year after I found out that mice had been stripping the fabric outer off, leaving the strands exposed. Well, that is what I think happened.
To replace it; hoist the plane up fairly high, and remove the wheel and the suspension block. With all that weight gone the retract should hold it, but it is best to tie the man channel down just in case.... You then have quite good access to the bungee from behind. Cut the old one off and then install the new one. To feed the bungee over the bars attach some string with small cable ties. You can then keep pulling it round.
To tension it it pull the end through, and then move each of the loops in turn until the black markings on the bungee cord are evenly spaced. It also helps to see how many black markings you had initially between the bars, and if the bungee is the same as original, tension it until you get the same.
I would say this all took about 4 hours, which was less than I was expecting. Its a good time to replace the 4 bushes in the top of the suspension block if there are any signs of wear.
