I think it is interesting to note that you can't ride your Harley across a
couple of different states because it's displacement is over 500cc, but you
can build and fly your own aircraft all over the country. Something about
that is funny (not funny suspicious but funny ha ha). I'm not sure exactly
what it is, but it's funny. Congrats Sabrina!

Oh BTW, Go Cubs!

Reminds me of a story a guy on one of the aviation podcasts (uncontrolled airspace) mentioned. He got his pilot's certificate at 17, so he could rent an airplane, but couldn't rent a car.

Oddly enough, flying is a lot safer than driving . . .

(and driving a motorcycle is really dangerous before you get past the
first 6 months. If you last that long, then the sky is the limit . . .)

Falls into the same category of being able be shot at and have hand grenades thrown at you but can't order a beer.

Congratulations Sabrina! It's great to be able to solo but it's got to be even more fun when you do it in your own, personally built, time machine.

Sabrina -

I wouldn't feel too bad about this test.  When I took my motorcycle test (more years ago than I care to think about) two of the perhaps ten of us failed for very similar reasons.  One guy showed up on chopper that could barely turn around in the parking lot, much less make it through the cones.  The other guy that failed was on a drag bike that wouldn't go slow - it was zero or one hundred for that thing.  I felt bad for the kid on the Harley.  Not so much for the kid on the drag bike - that bike would have been suicide on the road anyway.

I am sure you will pass the test next time without problem.  If you can build and fly your own plane then I am sure that riding a bike through some cones won't prove to be too much of a problem.

Good luck!

All kidding aside, it is a good lesson--read the vehicle manual before you ride, even if it looks like a little kiddy ride.

Sabrina,

A little trick I learned about controlling the bike at slow speed is to use brake torque. I can ride my Harley Ultra Classic through that course now. It takes some practice but I can slow speed steer my bike lock to lock at a slow walking speed and never touch the ground with my feet.

It goes like this: Hold RPM to about 1800, slip the clutch so the bike will move, and control the speed with the rear brake.

what the FAA will do--make us all get together with someone like Jay and
go through an R22 type training class. It may just be ground school.

Hm. I'm not sure ground school alone will get the job done. You saw how
different the elevator feel was from the 150. Could you have gotten in the
Zodiac solo and flown it successfully the first time? I know I couldn't
have.

In any event, I think the FAA will see what the insurance companies are
requiring, and decide that regulation isn't really needed. Look at the
current proposal for changes to the commercial ticket: no more retractable
gear time needed. The FAA's reasoning is that insurance companies are doing
the job for them.
