Thought I'd better warn fellow Europa owners of an incident that
occurred yesterday with G-MFHI.
A couple of weeks ago, we replaced the sort sections of 1 inch fuel
hose that clamp onto the fuel tank outlets. When pre flight checking
the aeroplane yesterday, I could smell fuel but couldn’t see anything
untoward – by the time the ground crew had come over to pull it out,
fuel was pouring from the underside of the aeroplane at the rate of
about 3 or 4 litres a minute!
Once drained, I checked the hoses and found that one had almost
completely failed and the other was well on the way. The hose had
swollen and delaminated. It had swollen so much that the hose clip had
completely cut its way through the outer wall of the hose.
We had operated the aeroplane on Mogas without incident with the same
make and type of hose for over 4 years so can only suspect a defective
batch of hose may have made its way into the supply chain.
Europa are looking into it but, thought I’d better let fellow owners
know just in case anyone else has recently changed these hose sections.

I've seen the same thing in older fuel tank outlet connecting hoses when the
outer got wet with Mogas coming from a leak elsewhere; I guess that the
outer covering of the tube is made from a different and non-resistant
compound than the inner liner. After drying out, normal service was resumed.
The same thing happens with many fuel hoses.

Hi Peter,
You forgot to mention the type and source of the defective hose.
That information might be useful to someone

Sorry Ira
Hose came directly from Europa.
I believe that its Semperit TU-25 - it has the correct markings to be this
hose but a hose manufacturer did tell me that there is some counterfeit
Semperit about from Turkey. The hose looks identical to the stubs that we
removed which had been in place without significant deterioration over a
number of years.
No word from Europa or LAA so far.

Thanks for the follow up Peter!
I heard the FAA recently say that counterfeit parts make up more
than 5% of the supply chain here and is a multi-billion dollar business.
Very bad business indeed!
