oil leak

we have just run the engine up (914) for the third time. After about 5 min there

was oil dripping from the right hand airbox drain and the air filter is soaked

in oil. There is no apparent leak from anywhere else. The oil tank has never

been over filled. The engine does not appear to be burning oil. It appears that

it has been drawn up into the airbox from the turbo - but why the air filter

soaked in oil? The first couple of engine runs (couple of months ago) there was

no evidence of oil leaking anywhere. Any thoughts?

 Usually when oil is in the airbox, the bearing-oil seal is bad on the intake side of the turbo

  

 If the engine is burning white smoke look at the bearing on the exhaust side of the turbo.

Looks like a turbo problem. Oil leaking via the bearing into the inlet.

The air stream takes small oil bubbles up into the airbox, but the

majority of the oil will probably dribble into the air filter.



Could there be a problem with the turbo oil return line? Should go to

the auxiliary oilpump, and from there to the oil tank. If you disconnect

it at the oil tank and run the engine, oil should be dripping out of

this line. If no oil shows up, then you have found the problem.



Wait a minute! You ran the engine a couple of months ago for the last time?

Maybe the oil flowed back, and sucked some air in the turbo oil return

pump. Once there is air in this pump, it won't pump oil anymore, and the

oil will need to find another way out. Most likely than it will overflow

into the inlet air channel.

You can also have air in the oil system if you (or someone else)  turned

the propeller the wrong way. Never tested it myself, but I've heard that

just a quarter of a turn in the wrong direction can allow air to get

into the oil system.



Do the test with the oil return line, and if it doesn't produce oil, you

will have to prime the oil system. This works great by pressurizing the

oil tank and turning the propeller by hand until oil comes out of the

oil return line.

I had a similar experience when I first commissioned the engine.  Sounds like the check valve on the turbo is/was stuck.  The stuck check valve allows oil to fill up the turbo on both the intake and exhaust sides.  Upon start up the oil on the intake side is blown into the air box where it then collects and drains as you have observed.  While you can remove the check valve and clean it, more than likely it will re seat itself.

Hi! Paul

Did you "burp" the oil tank by propping the engine prior to start up to

pull oil out of the sump?

Sounds like oil through the turbo seal which I understand is ceramic and

probably needs to get well up to temperature at least once to make it

good? However a leaking turbo seal could pass oil up to the airbox as

well as to the air filter.

The oil in the drain also sounds like some leak past a valve guide. I

just had that on start up after a long period standing.

I take it that the "Ps" and "Ts" were all good ?

Have you purged air locks from the oil system as per the Rotax

instructions? 

Sounds like you need some qualified advice IMHO.

Hi Paul,



I do recall that many years ago, John Hurst had a similar problem and he removed the check valve to inspect and clean it.  Unfortunately when he re assembled everything he put the check valve in back to front and the turbo was instantly destroyed at engine start up.

 

I guess the moral of the story is that you need to be careful when playing around with this area.

I, too, had a similar experience and asked about it at the Rotax course 

I recently took. They said it is likely the check valve, as Eric says. I 

remember they said you can take it apart and clean it, also inspect for 

slight imperfections where the ball seats in it's "socket", which you 

can do some lapping on to improve the seal.

As Eric said a sticking check valve is more likely the problem,

Mine did the same on first startup then run fine for 120 hours,

After the winter lay off its first startup this year was very similar but with less oil leaking, i have done another 20 hours with no more problems,
