I'm getting close to finishing my plane and I'm trying to solve one small problem. I installed the center "Y" stick, which I love. However, I'm a big guy and left part of the "Y" strikes my right leg, preventing full aileron deflection. I've thought about cutting off the "y" and going with a straight center stick. One other option that I'm thinking about is fabricating a pivoting crossbar off of the center stick, with two grips on the ends (like a Robinson R22). Any thought, pro or con.

Rich;

I have a Y stick myself, never used full aileron deflection though in
flight. If I did, I think I'd flip the plane over as most my inputs are in
the %10 to %50 stick defection range, even when maneuvering hard at low
speeds.

Rich,

Same here. I am a big guy too and do not have a problem in flight with the center Y-stick. To perform full deflection left, I would have to move my right leg over. This has not had to happen in flight. Since you say that you are pretty close to being complete, you should go ahead and fly with it as is first. Then, if you still think you need to change it, you will know exactly what you want.

Good luck,

Fred-
Very interesting. Are you flying? Cutting down the stick a bit would
reduce the leverage and help smooth out some of the pitch sensitivity I keep
hearing about.
If you are flying, do you have any flying builders out your way equipped
with the Y stick? I'd be interested to hear an appraisal of the "Feel"
characteristics of both setups.

Hi Bill,
I find the Y-stick really helpful for getting in and out of the plane.
In flight the stick allows my GPS to be mounted on the vertical portion
below and extend above and between the handles. This is helpful to
change GPS settings or even batteries while still being able to fly the
plane. I like the Y-stick and think it feels very natural from either
seat. See link,

Bill, I have the Y stick in my 701, and I have the shortened stick in my
601. Two different planes - but I see no difference. The shortened stick
allows me to relax my forearm on the center divider. I have seen that
others have had to add cushions to the center divider for flying with
the Y stick. As far as vertical sensitivity, I feel that the the
wandering comes from the plane and air currents rather than lack of
response in the stick,,,,,,,Fred N9601 do not archive

I have the standard length Y stick and enjoy it. As most everyone is saying the plane is sensitive to control input particularly in pitch. For that reason, and comfort, I almost always fly with my forearm on the arm rest and grasping the stick below the Y, effectively shortening the stick. I put my hands back on the normal grip area only when I need to use the radio (that's where the PTT button is) or during take off and landing. You should be OK if you shorten it some.

You guys have seen others do this, and most AMD's also, take the opportunity to turn the center arm rest into a storage box. Here is mine. The box top pivots towards the passenger seat and allows enough room for my wallet, keys, extra pens, small LED flashlights, etc. The aft portion has a drink holder for a water bottle.

When I have my roll axis AP engaged, I too find myself holding the stick just below the Y to control altitude.

Love the Y-stick!
