Hey fellow Zenith flyers,

I’m currently building the 601 XL and seriously considering a 640 for my next project, since it looks like I’ll pass my 3rd class. What about the 640 as an instrument platform? Can adults fit in the back seat, or is for kids only? Would you recommend 180 hp w/constant speed prop or something more? What cruise speed do you find reliable for x-country planning? I’m currently flying an Evektor SportStar and find that 85 knots is more real world than the published cruise (at) 75%--no shock there, eh?

Do not archive.

Thanks,
Bill Lanman

The 640 is a great instrument platform. I fly IFR a lot, and have about 30 hours in IMC in my 640. The back seat is tight for 2 adults. 1 adult or 2 kids can fly comfortably in the back. I wouldn't bother with a constant speed prop. Keep it simple with a 180 and fixed pitch prop. I flight plan for 125kts between 65-70% power. Flying at 75% power will gain a few knots, but increase fuel burn and noise considerably. You can push it to 132 kts if the moon is in the right phase and the stars are aligned correctly Smile.
