I'm going to the rudder workshop in Oct. I got an interesting call from the ZAC on Monday the 16th. I was asked if I was doing a 601XL or a CH650. I was going to build a 601. I was told that after Sept. they would not be offering the 601, but since I had registered in Aug. I would be one of the last 601's. When I told the finance committee (read Wife) we started to question availability because this will not be a build it in 18 months deal. Long story short, we called back and up graded to the 650.

Rich-
You're OK going with the 650, because the Zenith designs are getting
easier and easier to build.
HOWEVER- sh**can any self-imposed build time requirements. Haste makes
waste.
Starting now, get yourself into the correct mindset-
"I WILL build an aircraft equal to or better than something I can buy
out of Wichita, no matter how long it takes". You'll never feel bad because
something took too long to do but will always feel good when it was done
right.
Good building!
Bill

Bill,
Thanks for the feedback. That was my point. This is a save some, build some, project. No time limit. No short cuts. Hoping for 5 years, but it's done when it's done. Life had me wait until I was 54 to start one of my own. Hoping I'm wise enough to not get in a hurry now.

Glad to see a fellow Arkansan building. Keep one thing in mind as you start a 650. You might want to call it a 601. With the FAA getting twitchy on the 51% rule having a plane that is already on the grandfathered "approved kit list" is a plus. Someone pointed out that the 650 that was at OSH this year had 601 on the data plate.

Initially, there may be similar issues with insurance.

When I spoke to an insurance agent a while ago he wanted me to get a
couple of hours in a similar aircraft to cover my first flight. When
I pressed him on what was a similar aircraft his answer was anything
with a "601" in its model. That meant an HD, XL, etc. but not a 650.

For what it's worth, there is more in common between the XL and the 650 than there is between the XL and the HD/HDS.

I'd build the 650 and then register it as whatever is most advantageous at time you are nearing completion. A lot can happen between now and then.
