How much side skin ahead of the firewall will I actually need to join with the cowling? If it makes a difference, I'm installing a Corvair using WWs cowling kit.

Larry,

I have the WW cowling setup, also. (actually the Beta kit from WW) I
used the ZAC recommended 70mm (from firewall rivet line) overhang on
the fuselage top and side skins. You could trim that to 20mm from the
face of the firewall, but why? I overlapped the cowling side skins
about 30mm just to add a little more stiffness to the assembly.

I also used the Zenith recommended 70mm and as I was installing the WW cowling saw no reason to shorten it though like Jay I could have.

My advice is just fit the cowling to the plane. It is a lot easier to cut the sheets of the cowling than it is the skins that are already riveted in place.
