Hello List;

                 I  am now well into my 701, wings and tail group complete and hanging from the  ceiling of my shop. I have a question regarding bracing the fuselage sides.  Between the "L"s are large areas of sheet metal which I expect will oil can in  flight. Anyone noticed this or am I just a worry wart?

I added "L" angle zig-zag bracing between the vertical "L's."  Works  very well in reducing oil canning.  (The factory demo also has this type of  bracing.)  Some builders have used "X" bracing but I figure this just adds  extra weight and is overkill.

I plan on using the zigzag pattern, but I can't decide on 3m tape or rivets. I like the idea of rivets better as it feels more permanent to me. It also seems that it would stiffen up the tail for those less then perfect take offs and landing? Would putting a crimp or three in each one on the leg facing in, after assembly help to tension the skin out, is it necessary? I also plan on false ribs in the wings.

Hi John:

  

 The other day one of my  EAA Advisors was looking at my, finally finished, 701.  I DID NOT put any  bracing into the fuselage so will probably have a lot of oil canning.   Indeed I have been taxing it around the grass strip and can hear it from time to  time.  Anyway, my Advisor suggested that I simply glue 1/2 inch Styrofoam  to the inside surfaces and all the noise will go away, or so he says.  He  estimated the total weight to be less than 3 pounds if I coated the inside of  the entire fuselage.

  

 Don't know if this will  work or has ever been done but is an interesting suggestion.  He suggests  that it would probably weigh less, cost less, and be much more effective then  cross bracing.

 My concern would be flammability.  Doesn't Styrofoam burn readily and  emit fumes?

  

 Search the archives and check Chuck Dietrich's well thought out and simple  method of curing oil canning

I had Zenith make me .016 L angles and installed them using 3M tape.

After installation I crimped the L angles. If I had it over to do again,

I would run the L angles all the way to the vertical fuse L's and install

one rivet on each end of the .016 angles where the touch the vertical L's

just to be sure that the cross bracing L's cannot come loose and fall

onto the control cables. That being said, the tape has held fine through

120 hours and I only hear oil canning when I am slipping or doing some

such cross control maneuver. 



I also installed L angles in the wings between the ribs. My experience is

that the flat bottom of the wings are more prone to oil canning than the

curved tops.

I too have added 0.016 false ribs in wings (except outermost bay) and 0.025 

zig-zag bracing in fuselage sides (still building).  Used homemade tools 

from www.ch701.com (modified shortened version of Murray's "Home Depot" 

wooden brake, homemade crimping pliers, and Alfa Knife).  Used A4 rivets 

same pitch as existing wing ribs and fuselage vertical "L" angles.  The ends 

of the fuselage zig-zag angles pick up rivets in the longerons (same as the 

aft-most diagonal "L"s between horizontal stabilizer attach points).  If I 

had to do it over, I would have also added a false rib in the wing outermost 

bay, top skin.  May still do that.
