I have several electrical questions I need help with. I am wiring a 701 with an EXP bus and the battery has a external solenoid relay (under rt seat) . I do not have the Rotax engine yet,(100hp) but want to get as far as I can before I get the engine.

1st question. The EXP manual says "if you are planning to use electronic ignition modules requiring battery power (Rotax does) it is essential that to run a power source directly to the battery and provide a back up power source from a second battery"."Be sure to wire your aircraft so that the engine will continue to run even with the master switch off." Am I correct to interpret this that I need a fused wire to go from the battery to the ign switch then to the engine electronic module? If so, what size wire and fuse should I use? Would a in line fuse holder be ok?

2nd question. Is everyone else with a 701 running 2 batteries?

3rd question. I am not clear on the size of shielded wires for the mags. Looks like it should be 0.75 metric size. I am guessing that would equal 18 ga.

Mike, the Rotax 912 serires engines DO NOT require
battery voltage to run. They have an enclosed self
sustaining electrical system that is not connected to
the aircarft charging circuit. The only electrical
connections from the engine to the electrical system
is through the voltage regulator/rectifier and of
course the starter.

The reference to the battery powered ignition system
would be more along the lines of a Subaru or Corvair
installation. The only reason to run dual batteries
in a Rotax powered 701 would be if you are concerned
about loosing your radios or lighting etc in the event
of a charging circuit fault.

As for the wires to the "Mags" they are to ground the
ignition to shut down the engine. 18 Ga would likely
be fine. If you use shielded Mag wires, be sure to
ground only one end of the shielding. If you ground
both ends, they shielding has no effect.

Hope this helps answer your questions.

Rotax ignition does not require battery power to operate.
Ignition is separate from your electrical system (master switch).

If you haven't already done so, I strongly suggest checking out Bob Nuckoll's website. I purchased his book "The Aeroelectric Connection" and it's a great resource.

He has on his website a diagram specifically for Rotax 912/914 engine electrical systems. Check out diagram Z-16:

I forgot about the other questions you posted.

I am not running a second battery. As mentioned, there's no need for a second battery with the Rotax 912/914. A single Odyssey 680 battery will work fine.

Regarding the shielded mag wires, 18 AWG is correct (reference Rotax Installation Manual, p.113).
