To get a flat, light table; build up trusses and screw together. Use 1x2 nailed and glued to the top & btm., both sides of 1/2" chip board 6" wide. The top is 3/4" particle board. Screw it together with sheet metal angles at corners and long screws in the ends of the cross members. Can be taken apart for storage. Just as cheep as 2" material and much stronger and lighter.
