 There must be some confusion, here. Obviously the pumps are not changing behavior following what representation you choose. Just think of batteries in parallel (same voltage) or in series (voltage adds, current is the same).
 
 The Installation Manual diagram is right, except they forgot  to (or choose not to) include check valves.
 The other setup seems more like an after thought, and redundancy is not insured in all cases. Safety might be marginally less.
