<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Multi-Viscosity oils flow better at low temperatures, so you get better protection at start up. They also retain there thickness better at operating temperatures, so you don't lose as much oil through the pistons.
I think it was Mobil's synthetic oils that caused a lot of engine damage, to the point that a lot of engines were replaced by the oil company. Multi-Viscosity oil has been around a lot longer than that, and if it was going to cause problems, it would already have, and they would no longer be available for airplanes.
