Hi
As I look through the brochures I picked up at KOSH, I keep coming back to one from Approach Avionics. They make a wiring harness / hub system that on the surface seems like it would simplify wiring of just about any panel configuration.
Does anyone have any experience with this system? Any comments positive / negative welcome. I want to wire my own panel but at this point it seems like a dark art to me (then again so was riveting a year ago).

Les,
I believe my business partner used them to rewire / interconnect avionics in our D-35 Bonanza (1953). From what I recall it was plug N play and all went well. He was very impressed and could not think of a better way to integrate a Garmin stack into a 50 year old airplane.

Hi Robin
Thanks for the info. Their website says they are OEM for an a/c manufacturer. I plan to call them tomorrow to find out who uses them. All in all, it seems like a better way to go versus hand wiring if:
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>The harnesses are of a high quality
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>They are reliable and will be around to support their product
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>The hub will withstand the temperature extremes of a G/A aircraft in Canada
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>It will support whatever avionics I decide to install (that is still yet another question)

I used them on my 10 and have been very impressed with the quality and accuracy of the work. Their system also makes it easy to add or exchange a component in the future.

Les,
I was actually going to ask the same thing to the list. I have been talking to them and am going to be installing a Fast Stack system soon. I will let you know how the installation goes. I have heard some say the installation doesn’t save much time, but I don’t know yet. It actually costs less than buying all of the different wiring harnesses you would need to wire up a Radio Stack with A/P and a Dynon screen, so I think it may be a hard system to beat if it works anything like it is advertised to. Stein would probably be able to offer a little insight here. I know they use all shielded wire and shielded connectors on the hub side. Keep in mind, though, that they just handle the signal wires, not power, ground, headsets, etc. Tim will give you a good run-down on what things he can integrate with, but I think the list is fairly extensive.

While I like their system and it looks to be top notch quality, will it support any or all of the non-certified systems like, oh Trutrac, Blue Mountain, and whatever else folks are using? How about the various glass panels? Just wondering, as I was only thinking of certified avionics and planes when I looked at them. Don't see how they could keep up with the experimental avionics.

Jesse, they will handle all avionics wiring including A/P and Dynon, Advance etc. They give you ground, power and a pigtail with a female connector for antennas. They even integrated an external plug for a handheld radio into the hub so you could just plug in your handheld into the system and use your headset in case you loose your com.

The brochure from KOSH gives a partial list of what they support. Under MFD’s hey support most of the usual suspects – Dynon, Avidyne, Blue Mountain, Grand Rapids, King, Argus & Garmin. I suspect you would have to work hard to find something that they don’t support (as long as it I not too wonky).
I will post whatever info I get from them after I call later today.
