The 701 is restricted by CH to 200 lbs engine weight and 100 hp. My
question is what is included in the engine weight? Is it everything
firewall forward? Is it wet? and so on. Thanks Jerry

Its listed in my plans as 'powerplant installed weight' and I feel that would mean to include all coolant / oil, accessories. fuel pumps, propellor and engine mount system.

I feel the limit is at an appropriate level, I have 880 lbs empty wt (including unuseable fuel and radio / transponder) and the handling becomes noticably different when operating close to full gross.

Listers,
I am building a 701 and was hopeful that EW would be close to Zenith's estimate. With 1100# GW, an EW of less than 600# is good target.

What EWs have others achieved?

I would be interested in knowing the empty weight and equipment list of several of the 701s flying also. I have mine on the gear and I am about ready to install the wings. I might want to rethink my panel and other stuff as I am just starting on the systems. Anyone else have any input?

Hi,
I just completed my CH701SP this month. Inspection by FAA will take place next Monday. But back to your question, my 701 weighs in at 596 lbs empty. It has a nice panel and is painted. The CG is good with full fuel (20 gal.) and two 180 lb. people but can only carry about 18 lbs of baggage without going over gross weight. My aircraft was constructed from a full up Zenith kit with the Rotax 912ULS and WarpDrive prop.

Hey Ralph,

If your 701 is really at 880 lbs empty then you only have 1100 -880 -> 220
lbs for you and fuel by my figuring. Thats not much to work with. I am
interested in what has added so much weight. The Zenith empty weight per the
drawing is about 580 lbs. with a Rotax engine. What powerplant and prop do
you have on your bird?

regards,
Bob N701UB CH701SP

Bob,
Thanks for the reply, I like the sound of that weight better. Planning on a nice panel myself with electric flaps etc. Does anyone know the difference between the earlier two notch flap settings and the current single setup on the 701? Is there a structural change in the flaperon control or just elimination of the second notch for sport pilot reasons? Any help is greatly appreciated. I emailed Zenith but have not heard back and its been a couple of weeks.
See everyone at OSH?
