Listers,
Two questions if I may:

I am installing a fuel system very similar to that on page 6K2 of the 601 XL
plans. I have the Leading Edge fuel tank option for my 601 HD. I'm not
using a header tank. I have purchased the A10580-T gascolator and Andair 3
Way Fuel Selector value from ZAC. I have made and installed a Center
Console similar to 6K2-2. The gascolator uses an elbow (F139-4B) and a
straight barb coupler (F125-4B). My question is what combination of
fittings to use on the Selector value? The inlet for the left tank is on
the top of the value. The fuel line is approaching from below. It seems
that the line will have to make a "U turn". Does the XL kit include these
fittings? What have others used?

On the gascolator, a fairly large hole is required on the center line of the
fuselage. How are builders handling the retainer wire that wraps around the
gascolator bowl? And lastly, should the hole around the gascolator be
sealed or not? If so, with silicone?

Thanks for any responses.

Jeff Davidson

Jeff, I built an XL with wing tanks and no header. I have duel controls so
the standard twin fuel valves between your ankles would not work. I installed a
console and a three way valve on the floor to the right front of the
gasalator. I sent photos of the system to the 601.org web site and they were still on
it a couple months ago. The system has worked well for me and I have over 50
hours on it. I am not sure how the plumbing goes on an HD/HDS so it might not
work out. I sealed my gasalator with silicone after I flew the plane a while so
I could detect any leaks. The safety wire was not a problem. I then made a
stream line cover for the gasolator where only the drain nipple is exposed. Looks
pretty good. Best regards, Bill N505WP 601XL-3300w/dc

Bill,
Thanks for your response. Actually I have envisioned my panel being
very similar to a picture of a cockpit with the dual controls, Andair value
on a center console, and Dynon instruments from the ZAC web site. I suspect
that ZAC has an answer to how they suggest it be plumbed so I'll be calling
them next week. I traded emails, but didn't get my question across very
well so I got an answer to a different question!
I looked on the ch601 website, but didn't see your photos. Your
system is a lot different anyway with the selector valve on the floor as
opposed to on the console between the spar and the instrument panel.

Jeff,

I have the four-way Andair on the centre console. I'm using 3/8 3003
aluminium and fittings. Two things I did for a better installation:

1. Turn the selector upside down and have Andair make a custom engraved
label plate. Cost is reasonable. I ordered and paid for mine at Oshkosh and
they shipped shortly afterwards. I think it was $20.

2. I replaced the standard Andair fittings with banjo fittings on the top
two inlet ports and fitted 45 degree AN elbows on the lower two ports.

I will send you photos off-list. Maybe you can get some ideas from them.

My gascolator is on the lower firewall on the engine side. If you have your
selector on the centre console there is no need to put the gascolator on the
floor of the cockpit. It only needs to be the lowest point between the
selector and the carburetor.

Neil,
What a great idea! Rotating the selector value 180 degrees makes it a
lot easier to arrange the fittings. $20 for a new label plate sounds like a
deal to me at this point. Anybody mess up their standard label plate and
need a new one? Since I'm only dealing with 2 tanks, I think that does it.

After spending some time with it, I agree that putting the gascolator on
the floor below the selector value is an awkward configuration. The engine
side of the firewall is the common location. It certainly is easier to
reach during pre-flight there and it gets it out of the cockpit.
Thanks.
Jeff
