guys don't care about the archives I guess then
I don't either. If you can't tell which messages are useful and which
ones are not then I certainly will not try to
nudge people to use the do not archive feature in the future, carry on.
Just for the record here is an example of a useless
message IMO. That was the complete message in reply to another post. I
am not picking "BPA engines" I just think
that sometimes people forget to use it, I know I have in the past.

"Tell him where you got the engine Ross"

I will end it here so as not to continue to add to the useless posts
which apparently from the response I am getting it was. Sad

WTG Jerry - I'm with you........and if you ever have to search the archives

you'll see why.

Jim,

It is impossible to be unhappy with a guy who has a sense of humor and valid point of view especially if he drives a rocket. Wink

I hope Milt feels better for venting his anger. Unfortunately, he's added
more "useless" chatter to the list, in the process. Those, like Milt, who
believe it's OK to post trivia, jokes, etc., on the list on a regular basis,
instead of chatting offline, will continue to do so. If challenged, they'll
find a way to justify it. There will always be folks like Jerry and myself
who still consider the RV-list a support forum, with small bits of humor,
etc., thrown in, and will want to keep it that way. We'll continue trying
to keep our clutter to a minimum, and try to convince others to do the same,
because we've tried using the archives and couldn't find the information we
needed due to the clutter involved.

Those who contribute tidbits that aren't support information will continue
to not use "do not archive" and add to the problem. It's just too easy to
forget to add that little phrase. That's the real problem. Some worry that
using the "do not archive" phrase too much could lead to not having good
information archived. Most of the info we see has already been archived, at
some point. If one feels that the info is important enough to archive, one
can archive it for the contributor, as has been done before.

As for hitting the delete key, unfortunately, it's become the norm, instead
of the exception, for many of us. There seems to be more chatter than
actual support generation, these days. Oftentimes, a question is asked and
never gets answered because the responses have nothing to do with the
question. When that happens, I try to answer the question offline and start
hitting the delete key.

Anyway, maybe it's time to end this thread and get back to building RVs.
Enough has been said on the subject. We'll agree to disagree on this list's
usage forever and not get anything done. I'm headed for the shop where I
can take my frustration out on some rivets. Smile

I agree that the signal to noise ratio on this list has declined, and
that is unfortunate. But I believe that sending replies directly to
the person who asked the question only contributes to the problem.
It reduces the amount of "signal" on the list, and makes the list
look like it is only a place for chatter.

Quite often I have learned a lot from answers to questions I didn't
ask. I believe we should always post answers to the list.

Just my opinion.

A very simple solution to this problem is to build a signature file and add it to all emails to the list automatically that contains the phrase DO NOT ARCHIVE. Then if the author has something worthwhile to contribute that might be valuable to future generations delete the phrase DO NOT ARCHIVE .

And PLEASE stop quoting the messages in your reply. I don't believe there is anyone here who will not know what you are talking about when reading your reply post. It is redundant, and stupid to believe that a message needs to be included in a reply as long as the subject line is correct.

jim (do i need to add do not archive ?)

Jim, WADR, I take a message that does not contain some remnant of the
original message (so I know what it is about) and just delete it. Just like
this one but Jim knows but few others. Worth less if the original reference
is not there IMHO. do not archive.
