What is the preferred way to clean the engine, specifically cylinder/exhaust manifold/sump area? Given the leather/cloth in the area, are mineral spirits OK?

I've had success with simple stoddard solvent, but that's just me.

I use 100LL through a wand that has a pickup tube and use 80-90 psi from my compressor that is part if the pickup tube system. Available at Harbor Freigh. It melts the grease and evaporates before it hits the ground. Water, and solvents can get into electical stuff and creates issues. So far no issues with 100LL and have been using it for years. But remember, there are a lot of opinions and you will need to listen to them and decide.

That’s the scariest thing I have read on the list to date – sends shivers up my spine.
Count yourself very lucky that you, your aircraft and hangar still exist.
The a/c maintenance shops who annual my Yak use Varsol – a practice which I adopt for any DIY cleaning.
Be safe and switch to Varsol.

Did I leave out that I do all this outside in a 20 acre rock quarry using a robot handling the sprayer and have my aircraft insured for 10 times what's its worth?? What could possibly go wrong. Hey Houston, we have a problem. That it, I won't do the cyrogenic stir of the 100LL tank prior to application.
