Hello all,
I have finally hooked up with a group of very good fiberglass mentors and we are getting close to finishing the large rudder for my early model tail dragger. In the original builders manuals I cannot find any info on the internal counter weight as far as weight and arm length etc. Was there an update to the manual that included this info and described in more detail how the large rudder was to be constructed? We are at the stage where we need to figure out counterbalance weights and could use a bit more info to get this right. Is the method essentially the same as for the small rudder?
Thanks so much!

Thanks John.
Think we are more concerned right now with the weight of the internal (fuselage) counterweight that I can't seem to find that in the manuals. From that we should be able to determine how much we have to put in rudder. Looking for the diagrams as well.
Thanks
Bob

Bob, check page D-142. It calls for 3/4 pound of lead on the internal counter balance. Later a more precise dynamic balance is done with the tips. The assembly is balanced around a long hinge pin run through the short elevator attach points.
As I recall, this protects from flutter up to 295 MPH. I remember you and Bud tested that number in the RG prototype once.

Are we all talking about the same thing? The original email asked about the counterweight on a large rudder. Some of the replies seem to be dealing with the elevator counterweights, a much different topic. Â
As I recall, the instructions were rather vague about the rudder weight. When I spoke to Cliff he claimed the size of the weight didn't matter much because the rudder is lightly loaded in flight, if it is loaded at all. Therefore the plans/instructions were vague on purpose, because the rudder is not likely to flutter regardless of the weight.
None of this applies to the elevators which need to be perfectly balanced about the hinge line, except for the larger later version of the elevators. But that's a much bigger topic since it seems we're discussing rudders here.
