Pete;
What year is your CJ? If 1980 or later it could have the factory modified
flapper valves .

Mine's a 1966...with that dead flat tie-down, every time I got back to the plane the tanks were perfectly level and they'd stay that way all through flight (at least 2 hour flights which was the maximum I could do with the plane).
The other thing is that I spent a lot of time trimming the tabs so that at cruise speed, it was nearly hands-off. I also watch the ball frequently to be sure I'm not putting extra pressure on one foot (which is a normal tendency).

Pete, I agree with you 100%. Most of the time it IS a pilot-induced problem. But Walt is right too: there have been occasional problems with the flapper valves. My fix for that is to violently yaw the airplane.
BTW, you can fly 3.5 hour legs in a CJ6A with stock (42gal) fuel and legal reserves if you are careful. I have done several cross-the-US trips when I had mine (flying) and the ability to reduce the number of total hops reduces the total time to cross the country even though you may be flying at a lower true airspeed. A fuel stop consumes a lot of your potential flying time. Oh, and it costs less too.
