When I was in college in 1957, a fully operational Hell Cat fighter sat on a trailer outside of the lab. Every so often, I would sit inside of the cockpit and go through the check lists. The gardeners reguarded the plane as a pain because they had to move it every time they mowed the grass and would have given it to anyone for the asking. When I asked why nobody flew it, he replied; "Do you know how much fuel this plane burns?" Back then, gas was expensive and Volkswagens were hitting the American market to save on the cost of gas.
