Hello
Had a real close call yesterday.
I have the V541 constant speed propeller with reverse thrust capability. Reverse thrust is activated by pulling the throttle control back past idle, this then reverses the throttle and
Activates a valve that I presume reverses the oil flow to the propeller.
I deactivated the reverse thrust capability by removing the lever attached to the throttle that activates the reverse thrust valve and wired in the forward thrust position, the throttle lever also
Has a stop that prevents it from being pulled back.
About a year ago I ran the engine on the ground and it went into reverse thrust mode and I shut it off immediately and on inspection found that the cup seals at the base of the prop blade
Where it enters the hub had failed and oil was leaking out. The propeller is 20 years old but has never been used other than ground runs and I presumed that the seals have hardened over time.
I also thought that the leaking seals caused the propeller to go into reverse thrust mode.
I did think that it strange that in failure mode the propeller would go into reverse thrust and not into full fine forward thrust.
Yesterday on our 3rd flight the pilot wanted to do a touch and go and when we were at about 500 feet he pushed the propeller lever to fine and the propeller went into reverse thrust mode, we were
Carrying extra speed as he intended touching down long
We touched down on the numbers and the plane started going backwards. When he pulled the propeller control to “coarse” the propeller went into forward thrust and we managed to get off the runway
I will e-mail aviapropellers and see if somebody there has an explanation
If anybody has any thoughts I would love to hear them
Thanks
Mike
