Hello all,

Perhaps someone has covered this already - I would be happy to be directed to the answer if so.

I am trying to do something that would appear quite simple, connect the UMA tachometer specifically sold for the Rotax 914, to this engine.

The UMA "Manual" is toilet paper at best with the cryptic note "Connect the signal wire of the tachometer to one of the wires from the output coil/pickup, and connect the other wire from the output coil/pickup to the same ground point used by the tachometer.

The Rotax install manual appears to be translated from Latin and states (I am not making this up) "Feeding wiring to electric rev counter from the 36 pole receptacle of TCU - connections: flexible wire 0,75mm2 (18AWG) white No.26* and flexible wire 0,75mm2 (18AWG) white No.13*.

Now, I used to do electronics as a teenager, so this should be easy, but it seems both manufacturers have written instructions to keep avionics technicians in a job - this is cryptic at best.

The UMA tach did not even come with any wires, just a dismantled plug and the Rotax 914 TCU has umpteen white only wires coming out of it...

Has anyone actually managed to do this without expert help and can explain to me in plain english.

Thank you so much
Regards
Trevor

Trevor,
On the back of the gauge you have 3 connection points and from the rear of the engine you have 2 wires from the tachometer output coils.
Connect one of these wires to a good earth point and the second wire to the Signal input on the gauge.
The other two connections on the gauge are for positive supply and earth.
Now I will also add that instead of taking the wire from the engine to earth, I take it straight to the earth connection on the gauge which is also separately earthed. The reason I do this is that I have done several of these and on one installation I ended up with erratic readings and the fix turned out to be reversing the two wire connections from the back of he engine.
Have fun.

Many Thank for your reply - much appreciated.

The 914 is different, there are no tachometer wires that I can find and the manual for the 914 suggests that the tachometer should be run from the Turbo Control Unit - a bunch of white wires all looking the same.

Has anyone out there done this on a 914 ?

Help

Hi Trevor

On my 914 there are a number of white wires associated with my 914 but each and every one is marked with a Black Number! Look close now.

I'm in the process of wiring up a new engine and there are 2 longer wires marked 26 and 13. They will get hooked up to my UMA tacho.

See figure 76-31 on page 36 of 76-00-00
https://www.cps-parts.com/cps/pdf/d05014.pdf

There are also longer wires in addition to tacho for static sensor, caution and warning lights that aren't connected but all are well marked.

Good Luck (use Good Light and Good Glasses!)

Hi Trevor

You can also have a look at #24 on page 109 and 110:

Trevor,

Go into the 914 install manual. Read it cover to cover. It's all there.

Thanks all,

So using my ready-readers that you can nearly see bacteria with, I found the numbers Ron mentioned on the white wires - yay.

So we have established that one must ignore the UMA install guide as far as the wires chosen to connect the gauge to - on the 914 it is different - I will let UMA know how confusing this information is.

Now I know which of the white wires to connect the gauge to, it does raise another question - since the UMA gauge requires that one of the signal wires is also connected to GROUND, is the Turbo Control Unit (TCU) fussy about which one ?

Am I likely to short out the TCU in some way, by connecting one of these wires that exit the TCU and connect to the UMA gauge to ground ?

I don't want to make a meal of this, but the TCU is a costly bit of kit to replace and I do not want to damage it of course.

Any thoughts ?

Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor
I looked close at my 914 UMA Tach install tonight for you. On Tach Red gets power through a 1 amp fuse. Black I have going to my firewall single point ground (field of tabs). The White wire goes to TCU #13. TCU #26 goes to my firewall single point ground.

I suspect pin #13 and #26 are connected to a coil and probably doesn't matter, but if you look close at the schematics I directed you towards it does show #26 with a (-) and that's the one I am sending to ground.

A few more notes on the UMA Gauge:
If you send it to UMA they can install a Red warning LED that will come on if you over-speed. Also they can install internal EL (Electro Luminescence). If you didn't want to send them your gauge, you can install an EL Light Bezel if your gauge is 2 1/4" or 3 1/8".:
https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/umabezellight.php?clickkey=3738

I have a number of their 1 1/4" gauges and the only option there is internal EL.

I'm using the White which is a high color temp and is kinda white blue. We are pretty able to match color temp to LEDs. The EL needs a power supply to generate AC.
