I need to do a compression check on my engine to find out why I am burning/blowing out excessive oil.

I was told to do a differential compression check, I was reading the M14P maintenance manual and Task Card 248 "Check Of Cylinder Compression" instructs you to check compression with a pressure gauge.

My question is, Is one way better than the other?

I am referring to M14PF-XDK on a YAK 52TW

If the manual you reference does not provide specific parameters to check the compression with a pressure gauge, then my suggestion would be to use the industry accepted differential compression test.
