Most of the corrosion in the flap drive tube is from condensation. With grease on the flap pins and the tight fit of the bearings, no water from rain or tie down should get into the tube. If in a cold, wet, place, with no corrosion control on the inside of the flap tube, a fine rust scale will normally form on the chrome moly as in any stick and tube aircraft.

My tubes were filled with linseed oil as a film like the old timers did. OK so far, no serious corrosion but I do think a simple drain hole in the bend is a good idea.

If you have no treatment, Corrosion X or ACP50 in a ¼ inch tube played into the cross tube through the bearing hole and sprayed around with a bit of air pressure to coat the inside should work with the tube in place. Then for the purist, hook a vacuum source and pull out any excess fluid and it should soldier on for many years. Most scrap plastic brake line tubing is flexible enough to do the job and even go down into the bend from each side.

I never tried it, but I think I’ll give it a go on 96EG (one of the early Classics) to see how it works.

Bud, you are not the only one that put linseed oil in the tubes. I did too. Plugged one end, filled then drain. They teach you that in A&P school. Never thought about the flap cross tube, which I am about to install, collecting water at that end. I think I will drill a small hole. Seems like a good idea.

Back on the topic of rusty flap cross tubes.
The 96EG cross tube was pretty rusty on the inside. Using a 4 foot piece of plastic brake line through the bearing and spraying with anti corrosion spray, then air pressure to force the fluid to spray around the inside, worked well. Used a shop vac on the tube to get out any residual Corrosion X and frankly wasn’t worth the time for such a small amount of Corrosion X left in the tube bend.

Worth a try if you are worried about this type corrosion. If you make a hole in the tube bend bottom, put a drain and cup under the hole when you do this spray in corrosion control or you will make a nasty rusty spot in your beautiful airplane.

Thx. for replies. My flap cross tube is installed but baggage bay not yet in. I drilled a .100" hole in situation. The way I did it was I used an air powered angle drill. I first put a piece of 3M 375 packaging tape on the bottom of the tube then scuff sanded it with 80 grit. I took a piece of aluminium rod and drilled a .100" hole in it, it was about1/2" long, then JB KWIK Welded it to the tape. I had the flap tube in the down position using my EyeChrometer to get drill jig vertical and in the middle of bend. After cure put cross tube in up position and drilled hole. ACF 50 with extension tube once in a while while blowing and sucking is a good idea also too.
