Not sure what to make of the pic page 49 of the LAA mag Jan 2019, showing a tailplane with the skin removed in 6 big rectangles completely trashing it and saying that something has made the foam go soft and spongy.
Lots of that foam around uncared for and its still as it ever was. It mentions contamination but how on the leading edge? I think I would have explored some other ways like small holes and expanding foam.
I guess the only way in is via the tube and something ominous has been used to clean/lubricate it and its run down the inside to the leading edge. Maybe it was condensation/water logging then ice?

Holy-moly!  what could have happened there?  Protected from sunlight, the blue foam does not degrade without some reacting chemical involved (like acetone etc).
Curiosity from this side of the pond: Are there other LAA europa articles I am missing out on? Is there an LAA back-issue list of Europa articles?
Thx,
Pete

Peter

Good to hear from you in Canada.

The Europa Club is a member club of the LAA. The LAA publish the Light Aviation magazine.

The Europa Club publish the Europa Flyer magazine including safety related matters. You should be getting your copy in Canada in the coming weeks.

Malcom McBride writes great articles in the Light Aviation magazine on engineering and investigations issues each month. These feature all aircraft types.

The LAA take a proactive view on safety and kindly make available these Safety Spot articles online. The articles usually appear just after the monthly magazine is released. This free service is available here http://www.lightaircraftassociation.co.uk/engineering/SafetySpot.html
At the time of writing, the Dec2018 is the last posting. The picture appears in the Jan 2019 issue of Light Aviation magazine.

I will write to the LAA to request a high definition copy of the picture. Then release on our website as a News item shortly.

Trust that helps.

Regards

Bob

My first impression of the photo is that its possible someone cleaned the grease of the bearing tubes with gasolene or avgas, that would dissolve the blue foam.
There would be evidence for that in the form of a blue “lacquering” effect of the dissclved styorofoam. The solvent would not evaporate quickly because its
almost fully enclosed. It would hang around and do a lot more damage.
