All,

I have a Lycoming O320 in my TR1 and I am having a difficult time starting it during these cold mornings.  I am not sure if it is due to a low cranking capacity battery or the lack of a primer.  I do have an electrical fuel pump.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Any suggestions or recommendations?  Thanks.

Also, the Carburetor manufacturer, Marvel-Schebler Aircraft Carburetors LLC has issued and revised an Emergency Service Bulletin (SB) No. SB-18, dated October 14, 2010, to Revision A, dated March 15, 2011. Their position is to do comply with the SB before further flight.

Pass this on to anybody you know that has a Lycoming normally aspirated engine.

Do you have an accelerator pump on the carb? It should on a 320 or larger. It pumps some extra fuel in to accelerate the engine when you increase the throttle. You can pump the throttle a few times while the engine is cranking to get some more fuel into the dense cold air. You do not want to pump too much or pump with the engine stopped since fuel will drip out of the carb.
You could always go to fuel injection. I like my silverhawk setup.
Also, if you do not already have one, a modern battery like the Oddessy batteries in aircraft spruce should give you more cranking power for the same weight and size.

Thanks Scott.  I am not sure if the pump in the plane is an accelerator pump, I will check.  A few aviator friends have mentioned the Optima batteries which have significantly higher crank capacity.
