Having reassembled G-MFHI, it would seem that our cold starting problems
were due to the adjustment of the torsion vibration damper and thanks to
Conrad, these problems are now behind us.

I've been doing some ground runs to be sure that we can develop and maintain
full power - the first test is great - full power for two minutes, throttle
back and it idles nicely.

When I start again from warm, its a cow to start - sounds like an old bus -
then when it does get going, runs great at 2,3 and 4k but at 5000 RPM, I get
a sudden and quite substantial (300) drop in RPM - Eventually, this goes
away and again, it seems fine.

Is this the infamous vapour locking (I'm currently running on the 2 month
old mogas that was in there) - will this go away with spring / summer
formulation or the cooling I get from flight as opposed to running it on the
ground.

Does anyone have any thoughts on reducing this - we have firesleeve on the
fuel lines but they do run very close to the oil retun pipe (hot side of the
oil cooler).

Regards

Peter

Peter

It is good to hear a solution to one of those mister Rotax problems.

Now you have a new one ! Sad

I have experienced something like that on my 914S , at times. I attributed it to fouled plug "syndrome". It occurs after a long taxi and goes away in just a minute after full power has been set.

I have started to do my shut-down at the end of taxi a little different now to help with this problem. I "kick" the throttle just a bit before turning off the ignitions (together). It has not happened since I started this procedure.

On a side note relating to this : While inspecting my plugs doing my annual, I saw small globs of "lead" (?) in the space around the electrodes. I burn 100LL about a third of the time. I replaced the plugs and will check again before I use any more 100LL.

Peter,

The 914s have a mixture enrichment feature that kicks in at around 5000 rpm
to prevent detonation during boost. The TCU commands a 3-way solenoid to
switch from a low to high pressure source in the airbox effectively increasing
the pressure in the carb bowls via carb vents to slightly richen the mixture.
If the enrichment valve is not operating properly, you could be dumping too
much fuel in the mixture at the switching point. You may want to check this
valve.

Just a theory,

Tam
