Reversing propeller

A question to experienced floatplane pilots.
Is a reversing propeller useful on a floatplane. We are building a Murphy Moose powered by the M14 radial engine and wonder if it is worthwhile investing in a reversing prop.

Thanks
Rino

Hi

What Prop are you going with, is it two blade or three blade?

Henry,

In our case, we decided to go with the MT3 bladed propeller with the
beta. Our Moose will be on amphibious floats, so having beta is a
nice feature for docking. We have serial number 252; it's been a
four-year 5000 hour plus project. Our latest frustration is when the
prop arrived with damage on the underside of one blade.
One concern I have, you may give us some information on this, is the
out of balance configuration of the elevator. When we installed the
weights given to us by Murphy, and put the elevator on a stand for
balancing, we felt it needed to have an additional 6 1/2 pounds of
weight on the elevator horn, to get it to neutral. After several
communications back-and-forth with Murphy, they said that was the
correct design point. However, I come from a flight test background,
where this much aft balance would be unacceptable. From a flutter
standpoint you want to have control surfaces bounced to neutral or
forward of the hinge point. So, if you get a chance, I would be very
interested in knowing what your balance situation is on the elevator.

We are getting close to flying. When we get the prop situation
straightened out, weight and balance done, and the paperwork
submitted, we should be ready to go. But as they say, 90% done with 50% to go.

Good luck, and keep them flying,
Bob Tripp
