Here is the link for the Free XC Soar moving map software for PDA.

Granted its designed for gliders but you can set a glide L/D ratio
of 5/1
and it will show you how far you can go if your engine dies.

The other features more than makes up for any glider stuff, plus the
screen is configurable so you can select what is shown on screen
anyway.

The download site also has the terrain files and airport databases.

Download & Read the manual as most of your questions are answered
there, and there is also a video that takes you through the setup if
your rather watch than read.

I can help as well.

Gizmos and gadgets are part of the fun and it gives you something
to keep you out of trouble while the bad weather keeps you on the
ground.

Show this thing off to your buddies and they will be truly amazed
that you paid $1000 less for the same features, plus you can listen
to tunes and get a last minute weather report via wireless internet
while sitting on the ramp preparing for takeoff.

I depends on which PDA you get.

The software will NOT run on the "Palm OS" only on the
PPC windows mobile versions, so stay away from the "Palm" brand PDA.

If you stick with the HP iPaq, Dell Axim PDA's then you will be in good shape and can use the PPC2003 version.

The "All" is a good bet because it will have all versions including the PC version but it might be a huge download taking a fair amount of time.

After you have the software downloaded you can get the "Data" or generate it for your area if none is already available.

There are certain "Best" PDA's for XC-Soar as determined by pilots using them, based on readability, size, buttons arrangement etc.

If you need a shopping list I can give you the list of candidates I used just last week in selecting what I though would be the best solution.

Nothing wrong with used equipment either as I bought a used Dell Axim X50V with GPS card for the incredibly low price of $125.

If I were to buy that equipment new today it would cost over $500.

Plus I can get replacements, accessories and good service on this unit should it ever be required.

Here are the PDA's recommended by the users of the XC-Soar software:

HP iPaq Models:

Hx4700 (640x480 screen resolution Higher is better)
3950, 3955, 39xx, 54xx, 55xx (320x280 screen resolution)

xx = all models in that series.
Dell Axim Models:

x50v, x51v (640x480 resolution)
x50 (320x280 resolution)

Although the higher resolution looks a bit better on screen the XC-Soar just uses the 320x280 mode anyway but some are saying it does look more clear anyway.

You also need a GPS card that plugs into the PDA's CF or SD slot.(Not a built in feature but an extra accessory)

or if you have a standalone GPS such as a Garmin you may use a cable to connect it to the PDA(We don't like dangling cables in a cockpit)

Avoid the Blue tooth GPS as some have had trouble connecting to the PDA apparently(one user says so).

Since we want reliability lets stick with the GPS plugin card types.

You will also want an extended life battery eventually since without it you only have a couple hours of use before needing a charge.

Most do have a car charge cable so you can just wire it into your 12v battery and not have to worry about the extended battery.

Ray/All

Check out the following https://www.hangarb17.com/index1.html

They have aircraft GPS software for Palm based PDAs and smart phones. I have
a IQue 3600 that I use for my car and boat that I'm considering as a backup
GPS for my airplane.
