Original Firestar legs were 1" solid 7075 aluminum rod with a aluminum sleeve, probably .65.

The original Twinstar used 1 1/8" solid rod, no sleeve.

I don’t believe the flight characteristics of the Kolb aircraft are “unreasonable”.  If they were, I wouldn’t have waster 36 years building and flying them.

Wing and horizontal stabilizer, prop wash, all play into the picture.
 
My Ultrastar reacted to power as your FSII.  Increase power and it would climb.  Of course the US had a low thrust line.

I flew with a 72" WARP Drive Prop on my 912 powered MKIII. Had 3/4" prop to tail boom clearance. Was not a problem.

I personally do not recommend raising the thrust line. High thrust ...
